2023 Dabble Open: Highlights

If you don’t mind getting a little bit of FOMO then you have come to the right place. Dabble hosted its inaugural Dabble Open in January, which was an intense table tennis competition. It was a long and exciting day, with lots of action, and we’ve managed to cut down the highlights to just nine minutes. If you want to see all the highlights, the video is at the end of this article!

The weather Gods were shining down on the Dabble Open – which was very important considering the event took place on the Dabble rooftop. Get that Melbourne sunshine into ya! It was quickly announced that the table tennis teams weren’t just playing for prizes, but also respect and glory. So, there was certainly a lot at stake.

None other than Heath Shaw was the chair umpire, and we’re sure he was fair with all his calls...But most importantly he was looking on point, with his all-purple get-up. He was prepared for anything, and that included yellow and red cards – which he wasn’t afraid to use.

The commentators, Josh Jeans and Henry Nutt, explained the crucial differences between normal tennis and table tennis, while also interviewing the player's pre-match. Then it was time to get down to serious business, which included Shaw explaining the rules of the event, which didn’t really make sense, but that’s just our opinion...

As confused as ever, the tournament was underway! It was clear that many of the teams hadn’t played table tennis for many years, if at all. But there were a few standouts, just like the Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal of the tennis world.

After a tough day of competition, it all came down to two teams – the Spin Kings and Free The Freg. Pre-match the Spin Kings were paying $1.01, while Free The Freg was paying $101. What could go wrong?

In the end, it paid to follow the odds. The Spin Kings won the Championship match, 11-6. Their prize? A laurel and a hearty handshake. Just kidding! They won the respect of all those at the Dabble Open, and tickets to Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open.

So, there you have it – the breakdown of what went down at the Dabble Open! If words aren’t really your thing, that’s okay, just ignore all the work we put into writing this article and take a look at the full highlights of the Dabble Open below:
