Best Bet - 5. Vanquished ($2.60) - Canterbury, Race 3
The Waterhouse and Bott team have been in phenomenal form over the last 12 months plus, they have a knack of getting their horses to improve sharply second up off the back of solid first up runs. Vanquished is a horse who fits that mould exactly, he was brave albeit a drifter first up. That race has stacked up well since also. He strips fitter and looks to be the sole speed horse on paper. He should lead the up and find the rails in run in transit which is a strong profile around Canterbury. Overall, he looks to be the hardest to beat on the program.
Next Best - 5. Terra Mater ($2.90) - Canterbury, Race 8
I have always had a lot of time for the Jarrod Austin trained Terra Mater. She is a progressive mare who has improved 1-2L in every preparation, going off her recent speedy trials is suggest she has improved again. She has a lovely on speed racing pattern and is suited around the Canterbury track, the rain is around which only aids her chances as well. From the barrier she should and in the 1-1 or outside the leader with the in-form Nash Rawiller in the saddle. From there she should prove very hard to beat.
Value Bet - 7. Jaex ($16.00 / $5.50) - Canterbury, Race 4
With the way this Canterbury track predominantly plays, on speed and trials in run, Jaex looks well placed and overall a big price. He has to make the step up to metro level, but his last start win suggested he is ready to make the move. The booking the smart front running rider Tim Clark is key to his chances, as is the small field. He will need to improve again here but has the right set up to.
