James McDonald sticks here after a great run first up where the fitness just gave out in the final stages to Smashing Eagle, who proceeded to run strongly last weekend at Rosehill. Up in distance, added fitness, weaker field, he should be getting the job done here.
Next Best - 1. Nature Strip ($3.10) - Randwick, Race 7
Is Nature Strip the same horse he was before he went to Europe? No, no he is not. But is he still capable of producing a strong effort over 1000m? I say yes! He is old and he is tired but for the first time ever, he is the underdog here with very little expectation of him.
Quite frankly, if he isn’t running well on the weekend, he will probably retire. With this being said, JMac and Waller will ensure they do everything in their power to get the best run out of him possible and get him over the line as the winner. Go on The Strip!
Value Bet - 2. Rainbiel ($17 / $4.40) - Randwick, Race 3
Could we have a Mariamia 2.0 on our hands? Joe Pride has taken charge of another underappreciated Melbourne horse and seems to have turned her around. At least, according to her trials, she is back to her old ways as potentially a stakes-class horse.
Remember, before she fell off a cliff, she was challenging the likes of Marabi, who would spank this field. If she is back to her best, she can win, at a huge price as well! Heaps of value here, an each-way bet is definitely on the cards.
