Best Bet - 7. Layden ($1.75) - Geelong, Race 7
You're never thrilled when a horse you like draws barrier seven, but that hasn't put me off the very talented Layden at Geelong's Beckley Park this evening. Charlie Attard's three-year-old recently contested the Vicbred Super Series and, while outclassed, competed admirably in the final when seventh behind star Emma Stewart-trained rival Petracca.
In that Group 1 decider on September 16, he settled last from a bad barrier and then reeled off the race-fastest last half of 54.10sec to close to within 19m of the winner. It's the right form for a race like this and Adrian Pace can drive him like the best horse here.
Next Best - 9. Tic Tact ($4.00) - Geelong, Race 6
The next best from the card at Geelong comes from Race 6, with Tic Tact. There's a saying in racing about following mares in form and I'm hoping that Tic Tact can continue her red-hot run tonight.
Chris Blake's six-year-old has won three of her last five starts, with the most recent outings resulting in a photo finish second to the talented Dream Maze at Melton on a Saturday night earlier this month and an authoritative victory at Swan Hill last week. She's got the outside back row barrier to contend with here, but I reckon she's good enough to beat this lot at a very backable price.
Value Bet - 8. Ima Popstar ($9.00 / $3.10) - Geelong, Race 5
A sticky inside back row draw looks the major problem for Chris Lang's charge Ima Popstar, but that's why we get juicy odds for a horse going so well. There looks to be some speed off the front line and if Lang can navigate a way off the inside and lob a spot in the running line early in proceedings, I'll be quite confident of this bloke being right in the finish.
All his recent form has been great, including splitting Hit The Track and Hair Razor last time out at Bendigo. Both those rivals have won since. He's certainly no moral, but Ima Popstar looks a great each-way play in an even race to kick-start the Quaddie.
