Best Bet - The Real Sherlock / Queen Elida ($2.17 - Multi) - Melton, Race 2 and 3
Not usually a multi player, but these two horses look like they'll be saluting on a tough Melton card to find much value. The Real Sherlock is a top New Zealander who is on a Victoria Derby path, and while he was scratched from the Vicbred Super Series finals last weekend due to a foot abscess, I'm confident trainer Nathan Purdon will have him firing for this assignment.
He won his Vicbred heat from the "death seat" at Ballarat and flew the gate to lead in the semi-final, only to fade late for third behind Techys Watching. It was still a good performance and I reckon he can prove too classy over the long trip against a field featuring only a couple of legitimate dangers. Queen Elida is a superstar of Australian trotting and I think she will have little trouble accounting for the first-up Im Ready Jet, talented Mufasa Metro and others in the Chris Howe Trotters Free For All.
Next Best - 7. Keayang Ignite ($3.00) - Melton, Race 6
It was simply impossible to miss the eye-catching return of Keayang Ignite at Melton on September 8. Paddy Lee's squaregaiter was first-up since December 2019 when he stepped out at Victorian headquarters, but quickly reminded us of the class that had him unbeaten from four career starts prior to the long lay-off.
The son of Angus Hall landed in a spot four back along the pegs, but then let rip with a race-fastest final half of 56.97sec to finish third behind High Energy. It was visually brilliant – he was actually in front not long after the line - so I'm trusting my eye and believing Keayang Ignite can explode once again this Saturday night!
Value Bet - 8. Better Eclipse ($3.60) - Melton, Race 7
Apologies for not finding one for us to back at each-way odds, but I simply couldn’t steer the loyal Dabblers into anything on the Melton card at a big price. However, the subject of this bet is "value" and I truly believe Better Eclipse looks overs at the current quote. A tricky barrier eight draw looks the key concern for punters, but I'm banking on the brilliance of driver Greg Sugars to give his horse every chance.
Jess Tubbs' five-year-old has been great in all four runs this campaign, including a tough victory over the flying Bulletproof Boy last time out. In my opinion, he's going the best of any horse in this field, and I think we are getting juicy odds simply because of his starting position being inside the second row. In "The Candyman" we trust!
