Without further ado, see Tim O'Connor's race-by-race guide for the Group 1 extravaganza at Melton. All 12 races will be run at the elite level!
Melton, Race 1 - 1. Stevie Gee - Each-way @ $10 / $1.85
This is a truly wonderful card of racing, but the chances to play each-way look few and far between with many features dominated by just a couple of chances. Therefore, I'm going to strike early on a horse I think is drawn to give us a good run for our money at double-figure odds. Stevie Gee is a fast beginner in good form and will provide trainer-driver Alex Ashwood the option of trying to go all the way or attempting to pounce on the sprint lane in the home straight.
Melton, Race 2 - 9. Aldebaran Vera - Win @ $4.80
Really fancy the chances of Aldebaran Vera, who was narrowly beaten by favourite Lady Adelia in the heats last week but endured a much tougher run and only went down narrowly. She can turn the tables here.
Melton, Race 3 - 13. Sebastians Boy - Place @ $3.90
I think Arcee Phoenix will be very hard to beat here, but I'm keener to play Sebastians Boy a place than take the $1.50 about the fav. I've got plenty of time for Brent Thomson's untapped four-year-old, who might just get a nice trail into this race off a hot speed.
Melton, Race 4 - 4. Stormryder - Win @ $1.45
Looks the first lock of the night for multis. Classy youngster who should find the front and be too slick in the run home.
Melton, Race 5 - 1. Sahara Breeze - Win @ $2.35
Truth is, there's not a lot between a number of these fillies, but from the good gate I'm siding with Team Quinlan's girl to prove too good in an intriguing battle. I think it'll be a case of the best run in transit wins, and you'd have to bank on things panning out pretty well from barrier one. At least I am.
Melton, Race 6 - 1. Petracca - Win @ $1.28
This bloke has the brilliance to match his Melbourne Demons namesake, and after breathtaking heat and semi-finals wins, it’s hard to see anything but bad luck stopping him here.
Melton, Race 7 - 6. Draw A Dream - Win @ $1.65
Looks a match race between stablemates Renewal and Draw A Dream, but I'm siding with the latter after a simply arrogant display in last week's semi-final qualifier.
Melton, Race 8 - 2. Solesseo Matuca - Each-way @ $9.00 / $2.20
Just taking a chance against the favourite, who clearly looks the best horse here but has the difficult barrier to overcome. And Solesseo Matuca appears to have turned a corner since relocating to the Andy Gath stables, where he has won two races and placed three times from five outings in the new colours. He was very brave when running second in his semi-final last weekend, draws to find the pegs first here and from there driver Kate Gath should have options.
Melton, Race 9 - 3. Amore Vita - Win @ $1.30
Ready for Grand Circuit level and she'll be winning this.
Melton, Race 10 - 8. Billy Zippin - Place @ $4.00
Really not sure what to do in this race, but having a small play on Brian Gath's youngster who caught the eye in his heat when he closed off nicely for fourth behind Valtino. In fact, he's been beaten by that horse in all three career starts so far, but things can change if the aforementioned rival doesn't find the lead here. From gate eight, Billy looks worthy of a place wager and something the win if you're feeling fancy.
Melton, Race 11 - 3. Rockinwithattitude - Win @ $1.55
She just leads and wins again, doesn't she? I think so and couldn’t back anything to beat her!
Melton, Race 12 - 1. We Can Have It All - Win @ $1.80
Beaten by rival Violet Stanford on Aussie debut in the heats early last week, but Greg Sugars handed up the front there and was unable to run down his rival in the home straight. Don’t expect The Candyman will be willing to give up the lead this time around and I reckon this New Zealand trotter can go all the way from the top to send us home with a smile just after 11pm!
