Best Bet - 3. Destiny Stride ($2.45) - Melton, Race 5
It's Vicbred Super Series semi-finals night at Melton and that generally means one thing: lots of races with only a few winning hopes. So, while it's a hard meeting to find any value, I am keen to back the second favourite in race five on the card.
David Miles' Destiny Stride was granted direct entry into the semis after her heat at Kilmore last week was declared a "no-race", but it's the performance in winning at Maryborough before that which has me excited. She sat back last and easily handled a field that included heat winner Elusive, who reopposes in tonight's event.
The daughter of Captaintreacherous has drawn better than many key rivals and I'm happy to take on favourite Renewal, who was only fair to my eye when third in her heat. With the right run in transit, Destiny Stride should be very hard to beat!
Next Best - 5. Amore Vita ($2.30) - Melton, Race 9
Multiple Group 1-winning mare who is looking to claim three-straight Vicbred finals in a week's time. But first comes her semi and I reckon she looks a great bet at better than even money. She broke the Shepparton track record in her heat victory last week going a scintillating 1:52.3 and looks to be right in the zone for tonight's showdown.
There are some key dangers – none more dangerous than stablemate Petillante, who was a brave second in that qualifier at Shepparton – but I think there's a scenario where Amore Vita eventually rolls to the front and controls the battle from there. If not, she's still more than good enough to win from a spot off the pegs.
Value Bet - 3. Sergeant Lou ($6.50 / $1.95) - Melton, Race 8
On a very tricky night to find a good each-way play, this two-year-old colt is worth a bet at odds. Kari Males' youngster was very good when second from the breeze in a heat of this series last week and draws to dart straight to the pegs here.
From there, he probably hands up to a suitable rival, but should figure in the finish with any luck in the home straight. Can he win? I'm not sure. But we get a good price to find out, definitely worth a play at those odds.
