Clare Lindop's 2023 Melbourne Cup Tips

Horse racing tips incoming! Dabble’s very own Clare Lindop has broken down the card at Flemington this Tuesday, which includes the biggest race of them all the $7.75M Group 1, the Melbourne Cup. They’ve done all the hard work for you finding the best horse racing tips, so you don’t even have to lift a finger – how nice is that?!

Without further ado, see Clare Lindop's tips for the Melbourne Cup as well as her best bet, next best and value bet for the card at Flemington:

Clare's Melbourne Cup Tips

1. Gold Trip ($6.50 / $2.40) – Has been outstanding this preparation, and I would love to see him go back-to-back! Ciaron Maher & Dave Eustace are the currently leading the Australian Trainers Premiership, and they report that the 7YO entire is in great shape, and arguably going better than last year.

While 58.5kg is a lot of weight to be giving a few of the sneaky lightweights, I am confident from what I have seen that Gold Trip will have no issues in running well with 58.5kg (only 1kg more than the 57.5kg he won with last year). Brave 3rd in the Caufield Cup with the winner (Without A Fight) keeping him crowded for room and was hitting the line in the Cox Plate full of running. 10 days into the Cup sees him on the same winning formula as last year.

5. Vauban ($4.20) – My 2nd pick with the glowing reports from astute trainer Willie Mullins of how well he has settled into Australia and looked to be working well at Flemington last week. Drawn barrier 3 will give world class jockey Ryan Moore (straight from winning the Breeder’s Cup in America) the opportunity to ride on the pace without having to do too much work early. Vaubaun has won over the 2 miles before and will be the one for Gold Trip to chase down.

3. Without A Fight ($6.00 / $2.25) – Since staying in Australia after running 13th in the Cup last year; Sam and Anthony Freedman have turned the horse out in great form with 3 wins from 4 starts. An impressive win in the Caufield Cup 2 weeks ago, Mark Zarah has chosen to stick with him, so he is obviously going well. He is yet to have won further than 2816m and the wide draw will make this a bit tricker, but think his form is holding up.

21. Future History ($20 / $6.00) – Is my lightweight pick to include with 8-time Group 1 winner Hollie Doyle riding in the race for her first time. Can roll forward and expecting him to give a good sight.

Best Bet - 4. Blue Stratum ($2.70) - Flemington, Race 1

Well bred colt, and stable has been confident about his chances. Booking of Damien Lane is a good indication. With only a small field of 2YOs the lack of race experience is not such a concern in my opinion. Looked impressive winning an 850m jump out at Terang on October 9.

Next Best - 1. Pounding ($3.80) - Flemington, Race 2

Pounding is a bit of a stable favourite for Moody/Coleman and has been racing well this preparation in Group 1 and Group 2 company. Only beaten 2.5L to Mr Brightside at Caulfield 4 runs back. Big drop back in grade here, has run well at Flemington and stepping up to 1800m looks ideal. Stable will be keen to have a winner on Melbourne Cup day – he's ready for this!

Value Bet - 2. Skew Wiff ($6.00 / $2.25) - Flemington, Race 9

Mark Walker is a very good trainer from NZ with a satellite stable at Cranbourne, and his mare looks well placed here. Only beaten 1.3L last start in the Tristarc, and sure to have benefited from this run fitness wise. Has form around Legarto in NZ, and Legarto ran very well in the Golden Eagle on Saturday. Oppie Bosson is a champion NZ rider with plenty of experience here in Australia too.

Bonus Value Bet - 14. Batrana ($23 / $5.50) - Flemington, Race 8

Blinkers were applied last start at Ballarat, and she caught the eye running home well to win. Drawn for a good run from barrier 6, Harry Coffey sticking with her and looks great value in an open race.
