Check out our expert NBA tips for the best five games of the week, starting 23rd October (note: times are in AEDT):

Game 1 – Phoenix Suns @ Golden State Warriors, Wednesday 25th October, 1.05pm

The new-look Phoenix Suns head to the Bay Area to take on the Golden State Warriors on opening night. Both teams have key pieces to integrate into their rotations this season, but it’s the Suns who look the more ready to start the new campaign. Despite a new head coach in Frank Vogel and new starters in Bradley Beal and Jusuf Nurkic the Suns are ready to begin the campaign as arguably the best offensive team in the league.

The Warriors will be without Draymond Green for this one and that removes their best interior defender from the equation. Steve Kerr’s side owns arguably the smallest and slowest defensive guards in the league and I’m anticipating that to be the biggest point of difference when trying to slow down Beal and Devin Booker.

Kevin Durant loves facing his old teams and with Andrew Wiggins likely assigned to slowing down his impact, I can see this Phoenix offense finding various other ways to have Durant used to open space for Booker and Beal on the perimeter.

Chris Paul’s addition to the Warriors will bear fruits over the full season, but implementing his playstyle with this Warriors lineup will take time and given this figures to be a shootout I don’t imagine there will be time for them to assert their veteran star in time. Take the healthier team with the more cohesive offensive unit to get things done on opening night.

Expert NBA Tip: Match Result – Phoenix Suns

Game 2 – Atlanta Hawks @ Charlotte Hornets, Thursday 26th October, 10.05am

The Charlotte Hornets are already in disarray and the regular season hasn’t yet gotten underway. Miles Bridges was arrested last week, and rookie sensation Brandon Miller is also part of a renewed investigation released this week.

The team’s off-court distractions do little to help the mood around the franchise following a dismal 2022/23 campaign. They do get LaMelo Ball back to start the season but as we’ve seen in the past, inserting a high-usage primary ball handler back into the lineup can often result in incoherent offensive sets.

Meanwhile, Quinn Snyder begins his first full season in charge of Atlanta and things are expected to continue progressing in the right direction. His ability to unlock the team’s true offensive ceiling was seen in the playoffs last season and we’ve again seen flashes of that this pre-season. The Hawks are a far better team than Charlotte and you should find some good value on Atlanta in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Expert NBA Tip: Match Results – Atlanta Hawks

Game 3 – Houston Rockets @ Orlando Magic, Thursday, 26th October, 10.05am

Two young teams hit the hardwood in Orlando as the Magic welcome the Houston Rockets to town. Both teams will be hoping their young core can take meaningful strides this season as they begin to work their way back into the playoff picture in their respective conferences.

Ime Udoka takes over as head coach for the Rockets and his hard-nosed approach should go a long way to instilling better defensive discipline on a Houston team that lacked any effort at that end of the floor last season.

Meanwhile, the Magic continue to play at one of the slowest paces in the association and that’s likely to continue as they build their offence around former number one pick Paolo Banchero. This total looks a few points too high given the likely pace and the emphasis on defensive transition from both coaches. Take the Under in what should be a largely forgettable game.

Expert NBA Tip: Total Points – Under 224.5

Game 4 – Philadelphia 76ers @ Milwaukee Bucks, Friday 27th October, 10.30am

The Milwaukee Bucks begin a new era at home to a Philadelphia 76ers team that will start their campaign without All-Star guard James Harden. Harden looks set to sit out team activities until he is traded away from the franchise, which has made life rather difficult for new head coach Nick Nurse.

That said, the opportunity does lend itself to a breakout season for Tyrese Maxey and this is a matchup that should allow him to hit the ground running in a big way. Maxey’s perimeter threat should expose a Milwaukee defence that is severely weakened after trading away Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen in the move that brought Damian Lillard to town.

His spacing as well as his ability to penetrate the paint should provide plenty of opportunity when coupled with the fact that Joel Embiid will be occupying the attention of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez in the paint. Expect Maxey to be a valuable point scorer early this season and look for him to score aggressively on opening night for the road team.

Expert NBA Tip: To Score 25+ Points – Tyrese Maxey

Game 5 – Miami Heat @ Boston Celtics, Saturday 26th October, 10.35am

The Boston Celtics will get their chance to exact some revenge on the Miami Heat when they welcome them to town in an Eastern Conference Finals rematch. These two teams had polar opposite off-seasons and the additions made by the Celtics have firmly placed them as the team to beat in the NBA.

The players have already spoken about the fact their first home game of the campaign is against the team that eliminated them from contention last season on their own stomping ground, so expect a very fired up energy in the arena despite the early season nature of the game.

Miami’s offence is notoriously slow to start a new season and having lost some key pieces from their playoff run last season, I’d expect that to be amplified even more in the early goings of this campaign. Look for Boston to put on a show in front of a fired-up home crowd. I’m projecting a double-digit win by the home team in this one.

Expert NBA Tip: Handicap – Boston Celtics
