Game 1 – Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues, Thursday 16th March, 7.20pm
Once again, the AFL season kicks off with two huge Victorian clubs who it seems will both be in Finals contention. Carlton has had some pre-season injuries which isn't ideal and the Tigers have recruited for a tilt in September. It's going to be a cracker game I think a fit Richmond might have the edge first up.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Tigers 20+
Game 2 – Geelong Cats vs Collingwood Magpies, Friday 17th March, 7.40pm
Friday night blockbuster, the old and the new. I sense the Cats will ease their way into the season, but you can't help but get excited by Round 1. Pies were the surprise packet of 2022 and have topped up with talent to go to next level. Another cracker game, I'm taking the youth this time around – Pies to start of the season the way they finished in a thriller.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Magpies 7+
Game 3 – North Melbourne Kangaroos vs West Coast Eagles, Saturday 18th March, 1.45pm
Fair to say it's not the most exciting Round 1 fixture of all time but could be a good game, good game in terms of close not quality. Genuine toss of the coin here North has a new coach/ game style and WC have got some experienced heads back on the track. WC just maybe.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Eagles 10+
Game 4 – Port Adelaide Power vs Brisbane Lions, Saturday 18th March, 4.35pm
The Power are an interesting team, I just don’t know. Brisbane are top 2 contenders and the off season recruiting speaks to that. I think they will be roaring (pardon the pun) early, and talent alone should get them over the line.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Lions 26+
Game 5 – Melbourne Demons vs Western Bulldogs, Saturday 18th March, 7.25pm
Love this fixture on primetime Saturday night. Two Grand finalist from 2021 who were a bit below their best last year are now well and truly ready to go in 2023. Both gained quality players in the off-season and have stayed healthy, crack out the popcorn. I think Dees are hungry and have the best spine in the game, which will be able to contain a tall Bulldogs forward line.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Demons 22+
Game 6 – Gold Coast Suns vs Sydney Swans, Saturday 18th March, 8pm
It's pretty simple GC need start the season well have a good middle section and finish well to play finals. Tough task early with the Swans who will be burning about the GF last year. GC are a year older, but the youth of Swans are the main reason they made the GF and are also a year older but their mainstays are better the GC.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Swans 18+
Game 7 – Greater Western Sydney Giants vs Adelaide Crows, Sunday 19th March, 1.10pm
What a great matchup of two teams who struggled to get going that not a lot of people will be watching or predicting much from. Giants have a fresh coach and new system, while the Crows were impressive preseason (which means nothing). Orange Tsunami is aback and in honeymoon period with coach so that’s enough for me.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Giants 16+
Game 8 – Hawthorn Hawks vs Essendon Bombers, Sunday 19th March, 3.20pm
The old line in the sand game has lost a fair bit of its bite between these two clubs. With both very much looking to play around the bottom half/ quarter of ladder. Hawks are in the most aggressive team rebuild probably in history and Essendon are looking to rebuild the club back to glory. Pure quality and experience should be enough for the Bombers.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Bombers 26+
Game 9 – St Kilda Saints vs Fremantle Dockers, Sunday 19th March, 4.40pm
I am going to go out on a limb and say, the Saints are going to struggle this year. Freo surprised a lot of people winning a lot more games than expected, then fading late in the season. The Saints have 1 A-grader, and their key forward gone for most of the season is enough for me to comfortably pick Freo.
Expert AFL Tip: Winning Margin – Dockers 40+
